Buna Beacon, Wednesday, February 10, 2010 BURT RESIGNS SUPER JOB TO TACKLE WORLD OF LAW Just over six months after taking the superintendent job at his alma mater, John Burt submitted his letter of resignation to the Buna ISD school board on Monday night. Burt has agreed to become an associate for the Seale, Stover & Bisbey law firm in Jasper. According to his letter to the school board, his resignation is effective June 30. Burt said that the offer to join the firm was made during the holidays and "was sort of a surprise. A bunch of folks know me and knew I'd gone to law school. I was contacted by them, by another contact." The firm is a general practice firm, covering business law, family law, personal injury, civil and criminal trials. "I can't say which one I would be most interested in at this point," Burt said. "I just want to be a general practitioner and practice as much as I can." Burt graduated from South Texas College of Law in December 2008, passing the bar exam in February 2009. He opted to stay at Buna ISD, and with former superintendent Byron Terrier's move to Goose Creek ISD last summer, Burt was hired to take over the top administrative job. "I had intended to at least stay until my oldest daughter graduated, which is in four years," Burt said of making his decision. "This was an opportunity that I don't think I can pass up. It won't come along again." Burt graduated from Buna High School in 1988, earning his bachelors and masters degrees at Lamar University and his doctor of jurisprudence from South Texas College of Law in Houston. He was assistant superintendent for Buna ISD for seven years, and was first offered the superintendent's job in the summer of 2005 after David Hick's resignation. He declined the job then because he was attending law school, but when the vacancy opened again in 2009, he took it, noting, "There are some tough decisions in the future, and I'd prefer me being here instead of someone from outside the community." In taking the law firm position, Burt said he was "nervous, excited, hate to leave. I'm excited about going to work with them, and maybe I didn't look in the beginning because I was uncertain over leaving a known situation," a sentiment he echoed in his resignation letter to the trustees. In explaining his decision, Burt wrote, "I am throwing off the bowlines, I am sailing away from the safe harbor that is Buna ISD." The board of trustees were slated to discuss the superintendent vacancy posting during their executive session on Monday night. Burt said that he did have some regrets about leaving, but added, "I feel like we're moving in the right direction. We've been able to do some things positive for the future, maybe not immediately. The board is focused on its goals, and we're not letting up."
